DUBLIN (AP) — Ireland's Data Protection Commission has launched an investigation into X, Elon Musk's social media platform, concerning its utilization of user data to train the Grok AI chatbot.
The inquiry focuses on the 'processing of personal data within publicly accessible posts' made by European users on X, according to the Data Protection Commission.
The commission stated that the investigation aims to ascertain whether the personal data was legally processed for training Grok's large language models (LLMs) in compliance with EU data privacy regulations.
LLMs are extensive datasets of text, including articles and online content, used to train algorithms for generative AI systems.
Under the EU's GDPR, Ireland's Data Protection Commission serves as the primary regulator for X due to the platform's European headquarters being located in Dublin.
The commission has the authority to impose fines of up to 20 million euros or 4% of a company's annual global revenue for significant breaches.
X has not yet issued a statement regarding the ongoing investigation.
